Tools and strategies ... for boiling the ocean

uDig

uDig is an open source GIS software application built on the Eclipse platform. uDig is an acronym for the name User-friendly Desktop Internet GIS. The mission is to provide a "friendly" graphical user interface (GUI) for a desktop GIS application which also provides a non-browser tool for access and processing of geographical and geospatial content located on internet servers. In addition to its function as a standalone GIS application uDig is available as a software development kit (SDK) enabling its use as a GIS editor and viewer framework to enable these features in other applications. uDig was developed as a Java application and runtime libraries are provided for Windows, Mac OS/X and Linux platforms.

As developed to date, March 2014, uDig has been a community project led by Refractions Research. In 2013 an effort was started to move support for uDig from Refractions Research to LocationTech1 and to make uDig a first level supported project within the Eclipse family. As of this time (March 2014) it is classified within Eclipse as an Incubation project within the scope of the top level Technology project. The current version of uDig is 1.4.0. It is built using a combination of Java 5 and 6 and Eclipse Indigo 3.7.2, circa 2011. This creates some issues when trying to create mixed environment code using current versions of Java (Java 7, soon to be Java 8) and Eclipse (Eclipse Kepler 4.3, soon to be Luna 4.4). It is hoped that by moving the management of uDig within the Eclipse family that issues related to Java and Eclipse current release compatibility would be resolved by the uDig project team in synch with the Eclipse release schedules.
