Eclipse Architecture

Structure

A high level, technical overview of the Eclipse Platform is provided in an IBM whitepaper here. There is also a general overview of the Eclipse project presented here and an early PDF slide presentation presented here

An overview of the Eclipse Open Healthcare Framework (OHF) architecture can be seen at http://wiki.eclipse.org/OHF_Bridge. This shows use of Eclipse as a middleware layer and as an RCP front-end mechanism in the National Healthcare Information Infrastructure. Both of these uses provide some similarity in function to infrastructure capabilities that will be useful in an EATS architecture.

The following diagram provides a conceptual schematic for the Eclipse platform.

Eclipse Platform Architecture

Eclipse applications may be developed as headless applications (driven from the command line or other schemes) or as GUI applications.

IDE tools are typically built based on the Workbench IDE, which is a special case version of a Generic Workbench. These are built on the Rich Client Platform.
